Once a Learner clicks into a Course, they may select a Chapter of their choice, unless you require them to "Complete Chapters in Order".

A Course may have as many Chapters as needed – but we do recommend limiting Courses to under 10 Chapters. This allows Learners to train. comprehend and retain the materials in more easily manageable chunks.

Chapter creation is unique from Categories and Courses in which you can only create a new Chapter while editing an existing Course. From the Chapter Menu of your chosen Course, select the + New Chapter button at the top right (or at the bottom of the Chapter list).

Give your Chapter a friendly and descriptive Name. Then choose which type of content to start with - this is important because depending on your selection, the proceeding options may differ.

Create New Chapter

Jump to a specific Chapter type to learn more:

Note: Video and SCORM Chapters support multiple content 'parts' with the option to enable a Final Assessment. For example, a single Chapter could seamlessly go from a Video to a SCORM package, back to a Video, then end on an Assessment.

Once you have selected the content to begin with, you’ll be able to add your media and configure the Chapter accordingly.

Create Chapter - Video - Empty

On the left-hand side, you have your list of Chapter Content and available Chapter Settings. On the right-hand side is the ‘canvas’ where you’ll edit the selected Chapter Content.

Unless you have opted to 'Auto Advance to the Next Chapter', a Summary will always be last – auto advancing is not available when Final Assessment is enabled.

Video

Select the Video under Content (if not already selected). To the right, you will see two tabs - Video Details and Settings.

Under Video Details, you can add, replace and preview your (even interactive) video content. Additionally, you have the option to Add Languages (aka Captions).

Create Chapter - Video - Preview

To manage the available Language tracks, expand the details panel below the player.

  • Select Add Language
  • Choose an available Language from the dropdown list
  • Then browse and select (or upload) the associated VTT file from the Media Library

Under the Settings tab, you can ‘Allow Learners to Skip’ or fast-forward to the end of the video, regardless of existing Access Level settings.

Note: You can choose to add additional Video parts to your Chapter by selecting the ‘+’ button to the right of Content.

Now that you have added and configured your Video(s), it’s time to decide if you want to end the Chapter on a Summary or Final Assessment.

Document Download

The Document Download Chapter type makes it easy to add and deliver important supplemental content directly to your Learners’ where it matters most along their journey.

Supported document files include:

  • PDF
  • Word
  • Excel
  • Powerpoint
  • Text / Rich Text
  • and more!

Chapter - Document Download - Details

Under the Details tab, enter a ‘Description’ to provide Learners’ with a general overview of the documents you’d like them to download. This will display above the list of files.

Optionally, you may provide ‘Instructions’ that will display below the list of files. Instructions can be helpful when informing Learners what is expected of them after downloading the documents – such as completing a specific section of a workbook which they will need to re-upload in a proceeding Chapter for Admin Review.

Next, select the Attached Files tab to add the documents.

Chapter - Document Download - Files

Simply give your document a friendly ‘Name’ and select (or upload) a file from the Media Library. To add more files, just select ‘+ New File’ and repeat. You may add as many files as needed and arrange them according to your desired order.

User Submission

The User Submission Chapter type allows you to collect files or open-ended text responses from Learners Along with the optional ‘Admin-Review’ feature, User Submissions provide you as an instructor the opportunity to gauge a Learner's understanding of the materials and connect with your audience on a more personal level and building a much stronger rapport.

Once you select User Submission as a Chapter, you’ll see the ‘Details’ tab. Here you will determine which type of submission you’d like your Learners’ to make. Let’s look at the differences between these below:

File Upload

The File Upload option allows you to collect various files from Learners. Whether it’s PDF or Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, Powerpoint presentations, images, or even videos –Learners can upload files directly from their computer or mobile device, directly within the Training Center.

Chapter - User Submission - File Upload - Settings

Accepted file formats include:

  • Documents (pdf, doc, docx, xls, csv, ppt, pptx, rtf, etc…)
  • Images (jpg, jpeg, gif, png, etc…)
  • Video (mov, mp4, wmv, etc…)
  • Audio (aac, mp3, m4a, wav, wma, etc…)

Learners may upload multiple files, but there is a 50 MB limit per file submitted.

Text Response

A Text Response provides an opportunity for you to collect open-ended, long-form responses from Learners that don't necessarily belong within a Final Assessment. These are great for gauging performance based exercises, such as gauging how an employee would respond to a confrontational customer.

Chapter - User Submission - Text Response - Settings

Journal

The Journal submission can support multiple open-ended text responses per Chapter. Journal entries are intended as personal writing exercises for a Learner and their responses are not saved to any Reports for Admin/Manager review.

Chapter - User Submission - Journal - Settings

Your Learners may view and (optionally) revise their entries at any time by revisiting the Chapter. Additionally, when there are any ‘active’ Journal Chapters within a Course, a new Side Panel will appear on the Chapter Menu where Learners can select to download an aggregated (PDF) document of all their completed Journal Entries to date.

You may customize the Title and Description for the Journal Entries download panel under the Course Settings > Extended Info area.

Require Admin Review

Both File Upload and Text Response submission types offer an option which requires an Admin approval to receive completion credit. When enabled, each User Submission is placed in a state of “Pending” until an Admin or Manager manually reviews the submitted content and marks the completion Pass or Fail.

Chapter - User Submission - Admin Review

When enabling 'Require Admin Review', the following options will be displayed:

  • Send Email Notification on Submission: Enter the emails that should be notified when a Learner submits their content. The notification will include a link to review and approve the submission within the Course Report.
  • Approval Message: This is an optional content panel that will be displayed on the Chapter screen upon a submission being marked Pass.
  • Pending Summary: Located under the ‘Summary’ tab is the default message displayed to Learners after they successfully submit their content. This informs them that their progress will be updated and marked complete upon review. You may customize this message to fit your content needs.

Allow Users to Edit Submissions

Both the File Upload and Text Response submission types support the option for allowing users to edit a previous submission. This option is helpful if you are looking for Learners to repeat Chapters which require updated information and/or to allow Learners to correct any mistakes. This option is not available when Require Admin Review is enabled.

SCORM

The SCORM Chapter type provides a more seamlessly integrated option of adding SCORM packages (modules) directly within a Course, delivering a richer experience for Learners.

Chapter - SCORM

You may add a SCORM package as its own Chapter or combine with other Chapter content like Videos and an Assessment. To achieve this, simply select the ‘+’ button and choose it from the dropdown menu.

Assessment

Enabling a Final Assessment is a great way to test your Learners' understanding of the Chapter material and reinforce what they've learned. Follow the steps below to set up a Final Assessment for your Course (or Chapter):

If creating a new Chapter, select 'Assessment' as your content. To add an assessment to your Video or SCORM Chapter, simply toggle on the 'Enable Final Assessment' option under Chapter Settings.

If the Assessment content is not already selected, choose it from the Content section.

Chapter - Assessment - Introduction

Introduction

The Introduction tab appears before Learners begin the assessment. You can use the default text provided, add your own custom details, or leave the field blank to hide any instructions.

Note that Learners will still be required to select "Start Assessment" before they begin. You can also toggle on or off additional stats about the assessment from the Settings tab.

Question Types

The Questions tab is where you can add, edit, and order all of the available test questions for the Final Assessment. To create a new question, select ‘+ Add Question’.

There are four primary question types to choose from - select below to learn more about each:

Assessment Recap

Similar to providing an Answer Response, you can configure a Recap for the entire Assessment, based when a Learner does not successfully pass. Choose from:

  • None: Does not provide a recap.
  • Text: Allows you to add a custom message using the WYSIWYG editor.
  • Video: Lets you select a video from the Media Library to autoplay.

Chapter - Assessment - Recap

Assessment Settings

Once you've created your questions, head to the Settings tab to view and modify additional assessment options.

Chapter - Assessment - Settings

  • Passing Percentage: The default setting requires Learners to correctly answer 100% of the active questions. You can adjust this to provide a different grading curve.
  • Limit Number of Questions Used: This feature lets you randomly select a specific number of questions from the available pool. For example, if there are 10 active questions for a chapter and you limit the number of questions to 5, the system will randomly serve up 5 of the 10 total questions each time a Learner takes the assessment.
  • Randomize Order of Questions: By default, the system pulls all active questions in order by rank. Randomizing the order shuffles the questions so that Learners receive them in a different sequence each time they take the assessment.
  • Fail Test After Incorrect Answer: Enabling this feature automatically ends an assessment after a Learner answers a question incorrectly. The system then provides a recap (if configured) and instructs the Learner to retake the assessment.
  • Show Stats Before and After Test: This feature is enabled by default and displays the total number of questions and the passing percentage required on the Introduction screen. It also provides Learners with their final passing percentage on the Pass/Fail Summary screen after completing the assessment.
  • Allow Skipping AFTER Passing: Enabling this feature allows Learners to fast forward or skip video content in this chapter after they have successfully passed the assessment, regardless of their access level settings.

Summary

Although you can completely ignore this section and let it run with the pre-defined settings, there may be times when you need to customize the messaging.

The options will vary depending on whether you have Final Assessment enabled or not. If you simply want the Chapter to end after the Video, then a Learner is presented with a default Summary informing them that they have successfully completed the Chapter and it has been marked in their Report Card.

Chapter - Summary - Default

When you ‘Enable Final Assessment’, the Summary tab will include additional options which are presented to Learners based on their test results.

  • Passed Summary: When a Learner successfully meets or succeeds the required passing percentage for the assessment.
  • Failed Summary: When a Learner does not meet the required passing percentage for the assessment.

Chapter - Summary - Assessment Enabled

That’s it! You’ve created your first Chapter. To continue, be sure ‘Enable Chapter’ is toggled on, and then head back to the Chapter Menu to repeat the process for any additional Chapters.

Once your Chapters are ready, you can Publish your Course.
